Characters

1) Four barbels on upper lip and one barbel on the chin.
2) Mouth opening reaching well behind the eye.
3) Longest fin ray of first dorsal fin shorter than fin ray of second dorsal fin.
) Body moderately elongated.
) Dark brown, with lighter abdomen.
Maximum up to 20 cm length.

Similar species

Fourbearded rockling - three barbels on the snout and on on the chin; dark spot present on second dorsal fin and caudal end of anal fin.
Ling - only one barbel on the chin; no barbels on the snout.

Biology

Lives mainly over sandy substrate in depth down to 90 m.

Diet

Feeds on crustaceans and worms.

Importance

Of no commercial importance.
